A Cholesterol Test – Home Testing Kit Or A Hospital Test ?

Elevated cholesterol levels are a cause for concern because it is well documented that a  high level of cholesterol in the blood for any length of time can lead to an increased risk of heart disease. When cholesterol levels rise the chances of developing atherosclerosis or  arteries becoming hardened  increases. This may also lead to heart attacks and strokes if no action is taken. What makes matters worse is that high cholesterol is a condition that is normally not associated with any kind of warning symptoms or signs that will let you know that your cholesterol levels are dangerously high.

Establish Cholesterol Levels In The Blood

Thus, the best way to establish what your cholesterol level is, is to take a cholesterol test. The truth of the fact is that high cholesterol levels can threaten your life and coronary diseases are a usual consequence. You must therefore act with care and get a cholesterol test done at least once in five years – even if you are not very old.

There are two types of cholesterol. There is good cholesterol (High density lipoprotein or HDL cholesterol) or bad cholesterol (low density lipoprotein or LDL cholesterol). In order to know whether you have enough of good cholesterol and a low level of bad cholesterol as possible, you will have little option but to take a cholesterol test.

A cholesterol test is performed through a blood test that makes it possible to establish the exact levels of either type of cholesterol in a person’s blood. Normally, a cholesterol test can be performed at a hospital or, by using a cholesterol test kit; you can do the test from your home as well. It must however be pointed out that cholesterol tests performed at a hospital are more reliable and that is why you should get the testing done by professionals.

Home testing kits are a way to get a rough indication of your cholesterol level but ultimately a proper blood test can give you more information and be more accurate.

The only time that you need to become worried about cholesterol test results is when such results show high levels of bad cholesterol or when good cholesterol levels are lower than recommended. Based on the results your doctor will recommend suitable solutions that may include making lifestyle changes, controlling your diet as well as doing exercises more often and regularly as well.

Some doctors will prescribe medications to treat elevated cholesterol levels and they will also recommend that you should get the cholesterol test done once in a five year period – even if you are not too old.

A cholesterol blood test is required whenever you wish to learn about how much cholesterol is present in your blood. Such a test will provide you with rough idea about total cholesterol present in your system and the results will help doctors recommend the most appropriate treatment to bring cholesterol levels back to acceptable levels.

Some people prefer using cholesterol test kits; however, the results you get may not be very accurate and so, as a precaution, you must also get the test done in a doctor’s lab so that you are doubly sure of the readings.
