Identifying High Cholesterol Food
High cholesterol food can be split into two groups.
There are those
that have cholesterol in
them and others that will increase the amount of cholesterol or
LDL cholesterol produced by the body.
Some of these types of foods include greasy and fatty foods
that might have been fried in saturated fat cooking oils. In
particular, meat and other animal products like dairy products
will have cholesterol in them.
Two Factors That Elevate Cholesterol
There are two main nutrients in certain foods that make them
high cholesterol food. These are saturated fat and cholesterol.
Both these nutrients are commonly present in foods from animals
and their byproducts. You can expect high cholesterol food to
come from most foods that are made from animals.
Actually, foods high in saturated fats and triglycerides are
what cause the elevated state of the cholesterol in our
bodies. Our bodies already produce the cholesterol that
we need so we do not need the extra input from foods. High
cholesterol foods may actually not contain cholesterol but have
some elements or nutrients that affect the production of
cholesterol. These foods affect the presence of high blood
cholesterol.
Foods To Look Out For
The following foods are classified as high cholesterol foods
not only because they contain saturated fats but also can
increase the cholesterol production in our bodies. We
have already established that many foods from animals are high
cholesterol foods. Liver and kidney are among the highest of
animal products that affect the liver. Many people argue that
white meat has less saturated fat than red meat and although
this is true, some white meat still has traces of saturated
fats. Even byproducts of animals such as cheese, butter and
milk can affect the levels of cholesterol in the body. Dairy
products affect how the liver functions and cause it to produce
more cholesterol for the body hence the name high cholesterol
food.
Nuts are also foods that can be called high cholesterol
food. Some, not all, nuts affect the liver the same way that
dairy products do. In reality, it is foods high in saturated
fats that we need to look out for because these are ultimately
processed by our bodies to become cholesterol.
Many processed foods use trans fats to make them tastier or
as a preservative. Trans fats are bad for the body and increase
the production of LDL cholesterol. Although there is a push to
eliminate all trans fats from processed foods, you may still
find some products that use it. These products should be
avoided. Trans fats are also known as hydrogenated oil on some
packaging. Check labels of the foods you buy for trans fats or
their aliases.
Checking food labels is not a bad idea for all foods that
are packaged in any way. They are often required to provide the
nutritional details of the product. This will indicate how much
trans, saturated and unsaturated fat is in the product. The
label will give lots of other information about calories and
sodium levels etc.
High cholesterol food is actually foods high in saturated
fats. It is best to remember that saturated fats have a very
bad effect on our cholesterol levels. We do not need saturated
fats so try substituting them for polyunsaturated fats or
mono-unsaturated fats and use these sparingly too. Although we
need some fats in the diet, you can get them naturally through
foods like avocado and nuts.
